Torsion vs. extension springs
Not sure which you have? We service both — and we'll confirm before quoting.
Torsion springs
Mounted on a metal shaft above the door, they twist to lift it. More common on modern and double doors, they last longer but require special tools and training to replace safely.
Extension springs
Run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch to counterbalance the door. Common on older and single doors — always paired with safety cables to contain them if they break.
Spring repair cost expectations
Most spring replacements fall in the ranges below. We always replace springs in pairs when both are worn — it saves you a second service call down the road.

Garage door springs store enormous energy — a torsion spring under tension can break a hand, wrist, or worse if it slips during installation. Every year thousands of homeowners end up in the ER attempting their own spring repairs.
It's one of the few garage door jobs we strongly urge you to leave to a trained, insured pro. We carry the right winding bars, the correct spring size for your door's weight, and the experience to do it safely in about an hour.
How a spring repair works
Inspect & measure
We confirm the spring type and the exact size your door's weight needs.
Replace & re-tension
We swap the spring(s), wind to spec, and lubricate the moving parts.
Balance & safety test
We test the balance, reverse safety, and hand it back working like new.
Spring Repair & Replacement questions
How long does a spring replacement take?
Most spring jobs take 45–90 minutes, including the safety test. We carry common springs on the truck, so it's usually a single same-day visit.
Should I replace one spring or both?
If your door has two springs and one broke, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both at once costs a little more now but avoids a second service call within weeks.
Can I still open the door with a broken spring?
We don't recommend it. Without spring tension the door can weigh 150+ pounds and may slam down. Leave it closed and call a pro.
What causes springs to break?
Normal wear (springs are rated for a set number of cycles), rust, cold weather, and skipped maintenance are the big ones. A yearly tune-up and lubrication noticeably extends spring life.
