Torsion Springs Repair & Replacement

Torsion springs are the tightly-wound coils mounted on a metal shaft above your garage door opening, and they do the real heavy lifting every time the door goes up. Wound under serious tension, they counterbalance the door's weight so your opener (and your arms) barely have to work. When one breaks, the door gets dangerously heavy fast, so it's not a repair to put off or DIY.

Warning signs

Signs your torsion springs need attention

Loud bang from the garage
A torsion spring snapping makes a sharp crack or bang, almost like a gunshot, often when nobody's even touching the door. If you heard one and the garage looks fine, walk out and check the spring above the door before using it.
A visible gap in the spring
Look up at the shaft above the door. A healthy torsion spring is one continuous tight coil, but a broken one will have a clear two- to three-inch gap where it separated. That gap is the telltale sign.
The door won't open or only lifts a few inches
With a broken spring, the opener has nothing helping it lift the dead weight, so the door either won't budge or jerks up a few inches and stops. Forcing it can burn out the opener motor.
The door feels incredibly heavy by hand
Pull the release cord and try lifting the door manually. If it slams down or feels like dead weight instead of gliding, your springs have lost their tension and can't counterbalance the door anymore.
The door slams shut or drops fast
A weakening spring stops holding the door's weight on the way down, so it closes harder and faster than it should. That's a safety hazard for kids, pets, and anything in its path.
Crackling, jerky, or uneven movement
Worn coils, rust, or gaps between windings make the door shudder, hesitate, or rise crooked. It usually means the spring is fatigued and getting close to failing for good.
Lifespan

How long do torsion springs last?

Typically 7-12 years, or roughly 10,000-15,000 open/close cycles. A two-car door used a few times a day usually lands in that range; high-cycle springs can last 20,000+ cycles.
