Cables Repair & Replacement

Your garage door cables are the steel ropes that work hand-in-hand with the springs to lift and lower hundreds of pounds of door, smoothly and safely, every single day. When a cable frays or snaps, the door can hang crooked, jam in the tracks, or come crashing down without warning — so this is one part you don't want to push your luck with. If a cable just let go and your door is stuck or sagging, stop using it and give us a call; we'll get someone out to make it safe.

Warning signs

Signs your cables need attention

Fraying or broken strands
Look closely at the cables running down each side of the door. If you see fuzzy, splayed-out wire strands or a spot that looks chewed up, the cable is on its way out — a fully snapped cable is just a matter of time, and it usually goes at the worst moment.
Door hangs crooked or lopsided
When one cable stretches or breaks, that side stops getting lifted evenly. If your door looks tilted, sits higher on one corner, or jams in the tracks when it moves, a failing cable is a likely culprit.
Cable hanging loose or off the drum
A cable that's gone slack, is dangling, or has slipped off the drum (the grooved spool at the top of the track) means the door has lost its counterbalance on that side. Don't operate the door — it can drop fast.
Loud bang followed by a stuck door
A snapping cable often makes a sharp pop or bang, and then the door won't move right — or won't move at all. If that just happened, treat it as urgent and keep people and cars clear of the doorway.
Rust, kinks, or visible wear
Cables live in a damp, dirty spot, and rust or sharp kinks weaken the steel over time. Rusty, kinked, or stiff cables are a sign the wire is brittle and should be replaced before it fails.
Door feels heavy or grinds when moving
If your opener strains, the door drags, or you hear grinding as it travels, a stretched or misrouted cable could be throwing off the balance and putting extra load on the whole system.
Lifespan

How long do cables last?

8–15 years (or roughly 10,000–15,000 cycles), depending on door weight, climate, and how often you use the door
