What might be wrong

Common causes when your garage door won't open

Here's what our local techs check first — and what each one usually means.

A broken spring

If you heard a loud bang recently, a snapped torsion spring is the likely reason the opener can no longer lift the door.

Dead remote or keypad batteries

The simplest fix of all — fresh batteries in the remote or keypad often bring it right back to life.

Misaligned or blocked safety sensors

If the photo-eye sensors near the floor are bumped or dirty, the opener may refuse to run.

A burned-out or unplugged opener

Power loss, a tripped breaker, or a failed opener motor will leave the door dead.
