Hinges Repair & Replacement
Hinges are the unsung workhorses of your garage door, connecting the panels and letting them bend smoothly as the door rolls up and over its track. Each section relies on these small metal brackets to flex at exactly the right spot, and the numbered hinges down the middle take the most stress every single time the door cycles. When a hinge cracks, rusts, or works loose, you'll usually hear about it before you see it.
Warning signs
Signs your hinges need attention
Loud popping or banging mid-travel
A sharp pop or clunk as the door reaches a certain point usually means a hinge is binding, cracked, or has lost a fastener. The panels are fighting to bend where a worn hinge no longer flexes cleanly.
Visible cracks or bent metal
Walk the door and look at each hinge, especially the center ones. Hairline cracks, bent leaves, or a hinge pulling away from the panel are clear signs it's on its way out and needs replacing before it fails completely.
Rust, corrosion, or seized pins
Orange rust streaks or a hinge that won't pivot freely add friction and strain to the whole system. A seized pin forces the opener and other hardware to work harder, wearing them out faster.
Squeaking or grinding that oiling won't fix
A little lubricant should quiet a noisy door. If the squeak or metal-on-metal grind comes right back, the hinge itself is worn at the pivot and lubricant can't make up for the slop.
A door that looks crooked or sags in a section
When a hinge gives out, the panel it holds can shift, leaving the door looking uneven or sagging on one side. That misalignment puts the door at real risk of jamming or coming off its track.
Loose screws or hardware on the floor
Finding screws or a small bracket under your door is a tell that a hinge has worked loose from years of vibration. Left alone, it can let a panel separate while the door is moving.
Lifespan
How long do hinges last?
15-20 years (often the full life of the door, though center hinges may wear sooner on heavily used doors)
