Common issues

Common Genie problems we fix

Opener runs but the door won't move

On Genie screw-drive and some belt-drive models, the carriage that connects the trolley to the door can wear out or disengage. If you hear the motor humming but the door just sits there, the trolley or carriage is usually the culprit, and it's a straightforward fix once we diagnose it.

Won't program or keep a remote and keypad

Genie uses Intellicode rolling-code technology, and pairing remotes or the wireless keypad to the Learn button can be finicky, especially after a power outage or a dead keypad battery. If your remote suddenly stopped working or you can't get a new one to sync, we can walk through reprogramming or replace a failing logic board.

Aladdin Connect won't stay online

On the Connect-series smart openers, the door can drop off Wi-Fi or stop responding in the Aladdin Connect app even when the opener itself works fine from the wall button. This is often a weak garage Wi-Fi signal, an app update, or a door-position sensor that needs recalibrating. We sort out which one it is rather than have you keep resetting it.

Door reverses before it closes

Genie's Safe-T-Beam safety sensors near the floor will reverse the door if the beam is blocked or misaligned. A bumped bracket, a cobweb, or sun glare can trip it. If you're seeing the red sensor light blink and the door pop back open, realigning or cleaning the beams usually does it.

Loud grinding or rattling from a chain or screw drive

Older Genie chain-drive and screw-drive units get noisy as the rail dries out, the chain stretches, or the gear and sprocket assembly wears down. Sometimes it's just lubrication; sometimes that plastic drive gear has stripped and needs replacing. We can tell you which, and whether it's worth repairing or stepping up to a quieter belt-drive model.

No power or unresponsive after a storm

Power surges are hard on opener logic boards, and Genie units with battery backup will also throw codes when the backup battery reaches end of life. If your opener is totally dead or beeping with a blinking light, it's often the board or the backup battery, both of which we stock and replace.

FAQ

Genie questions

My Genie remote suddenly stopped working. Do I need a new opener?

Almost never. Most of the time it's a dead remote battery, or the remote lost its sync with the opener's Intellicode rolling code, which can happen after a power blip. Try a fresh battery first. If that doesn't do it, the remote can usually be reprogrammed to the Learn button on the motor head in under a minute. If a new, properly programmed remote still won't work, the receiver logic board may be failing, and we can replace just that part rather than the whole unit.

Are Genie parts easy to get, or will I be waiting forever?

Genie is one of the most common openers in the country, so parts are widely available and we keep the usual wear items on the truck: trolleys, carriages, drive gears, Safe-T-Beam sensors, logic boards, and battery-backup batteries. For most repairs we can fix it the same visit without ordering anything special.

How long should a Genie opener last?

A well-maintained Genie typically runs 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer. The motor usually outlives the smaller parts, so it's normal to replace a drive gear, trolley, or sensor along the way. If yours is past 15 years, needs a pricey part, and lacks safety features like auto-reverse, we'll give you an honest take on repair versus replacement instead of just pushing a new unit.

Can you make my Genie work with my phone and Alexa?

If you have one of the Connect-series openers (StealthDrive Connect, SilentMax Connect, Chain Glide Connect, QuietLift Connect), it already supports the Aladdin Connect app and works with Alexa and Google Home. If you've got an older Genie that isn't smart, you don't have to replace it. A retrofit Aladdin Connect kit can add app control to most existing openers, and we can install and set it up for you.
