Common issues

Common Clopay problems we fix

Broken torsion spring on heavier insulated doors

Clopay's insulated lines like the Coachman and Canyon Ridge are built with multiple layers, which makes them solid and quiet but also heavy. That extra weight puts real strain on the torsion springs, and after years of daily cycling they snap, often with a loud bang. If your door won't budge and you spot a gap in the coiled spring above the door, don't try to force it open by hand. This is a job for us, and we'll have a properly sized replacement on the truck.

Section or panel damage on steel doors

The Classic, Gallery, and Modern Steel lines are steel-faced, and steel dents. A bumped car, a stray basketball, or a hard freeze-thaw winter can leave a crease in a single panel. The good news with Clopay is that doors are built in individual sections, so in many cases we can swap out just the damaged section instead of replacing the whole door, which saves you a chunk of money.

Composite overlay separating on Canyon Ridge doors

Canyon Ridge doors get their convincing wood look from a moisture-resistant composite overlay bonded to an insulated steel base. Over many years, or after a botched repair, that overlay can start to loosen or pull away at the edges, especially on doors that take a lot of direct sun. We can re-secure or replace affected overlay pieces and color-match so it blends back in.

Worn rollers and hinges causing grinding or jerky travel

If your Clopay door has started grinding, squealing, or moving in jerks, the culprit is usually worn nylon rollers or loose hinges. It's one of the most common things we see, and it's an easy, affordable fix. Left alone, bad rollers throw the door out of alignment and put extra load on the opener, so it's worth catching early.

Opener and door out of sync after a power outage

Clopay doors are typically run by a LiftMaster opener, and after a power blip or a dead backup battery, the opener can lose its travel limits or the keypad and remotes can stop talking to it. The door might stop halfway, reverse for no reason, or refuse to close. Reprogramming the limits and force settings usually sorts it out, and we can walk you through it or handle it on a visit.

Weather seal and bottom retainer wear

Clopay doors use a bottom rubber seal that slides into an aluminum retainer along the base. In cold climates that rubber gets brittle and cracks, letting in drafts, water, leaves, and the occasional rodent. Replacing the bottom seal is quick and inexpensive, and it makes a noticeable difference in how warm and clean your garage stays.

FAQ

Clopay questions

Does Clopay make its own garage door openers?

Not really. Clopay is first and foremost a door manufacturer, and they partner with LiftMaster for openers. So if you bought a Clopay door, there's a very good chance it came with a LiftMaster opener on it. We service both the door and the LiftMaster opener, so you only need to make one call.

How do I find out which Clopay model I have?

Most Clopay doors have a label or stamp on the inside, often on one of the door sections or near the bottom corner, with a model name or number. If you can snap a photo of that label and the door itself, we can usually identify your exact line and have the right parts ready before we even show up.

Can you repair just one damaged section of my Clopay door?

Often, yes. Clopay doors are built in individual horizontal sections, so when one panel gets dented or damaged we can frequently replace just that section and match the color, rather than swapping the entire door. We'll always tell you honestly whether a section repair or a full replacement makes more sense for your situation and budget.

My Clopay spring broke and the door won't open. What should I do?

First, take a breath, this is a common emergency and you're not stuck for long. Don't try to force the door open or hang on the cables, because a door with a broken spring is heavy and unpredictable. Park any cars elsewhere if the door is down, keep kids and pets clear, and give us a call. Spring replacement is one of the most frequent repairs we do, and we'll get you safely back up and running fast.
