How to Program a LiftMaster Remote in Minutes
To program a LiftMaster remote, press and release the "Learn" button on your garage door opener motor unit, then press the button on your remote within 30 seconds. The opener lights will blink or you'll hear a click to confirm it worked. The whole thing usually takes under two minutes, and you don't need any tools.
Step by step
-
1
Find the Learn button on your opener
Grab a step stool and look at the back or side of the motor unit mounted to your ceiling — the part the rail runs into, not the wall control. The Learn button is a small square or round button (often yellow, purple, red, orange, or green) usually right next to a hanging antenna wire and a tiny LED. The color matters later, so make a mental note of it. If your unit is in a dark spot, bring a flashlight.
-
2
Press and release the Learn button
Press the Learn button once and let go — don't hold it down. A small LED next to it will light up (or start blinking) and stay on for about 30 seconds. That's your programming window. You'll want to be standing where you can reach your remote, because the clock is now ticking.
-
3
Press the remote button within 30 seconds
While that LED is still lit, press the button on your remote that you want to control the door. Press it once, firmly. On most newer LiftMaster units the opener lights will flash or the motor will click twice to tell you it took. If nothing happens before the LED goes dark, no harm done — just press Learn again and retry. Standing within a few feet of the opener helps the first time.
-
4
Test the door from the remote
Step back, point the remote at the door, and press the button. The door should open or close. Then test it again from inside your parked car, which is the real-world distance that matters. If it works at the opener but not from the driveway, the remote battery is likely weak — pop in a fresh CR2032 or 23A (check the back of the remote) and reprogram.
-
5
Clear old remotes if you bought a used home or lost a remote
Security tip most folks skip: if you just moved in, or a remote went missing, wipe every code the opener remembers. Press and HOLD the Learn button for about 6 seconds until the LED turns off — this erases all programmed remotes and keypads at once. Then reprogram the remotes you actually have, one at a time, using the steps above. Now a lost remote can't open your door.
When to call a pro
If the Learn button is missing, broken, or the LED never lights up — or your opener was made before 1993 (those use DIP-switch dials, not a Learn button) — call a local garage door pro. Same goes if a fresh battery and re-programming still won't get the remote to work; that usually points to a failing logic board or radio receiver, not the remote.

Where is the Learn button on a LiftMaster opener?
It's on the powerhead — the motor unit bolted to your garage ceiling — not on the wall button by the door. Look on the back or side panel near the antenna wire that hangs down, and you'll see a small colored button (yellow, purple, red, orange, or green) with a tiny LED beside it. You may need to remove a light cover or lens on some models to see it.
Why won't my LiftMaster remote program?
The most common reasons are running out of the 30-second window, a dead remote battery, or pressing Learn twice (which can put the unit into a different mode). Try a fresh battery, press Learn just once so the LED is solidly lit, then press the remote button right away while standing close to the opener. If it still won't take after a clean erase-and-reprogram, the opener's receiver board may be failing.
Do I need to know my LiftMaster's color code to program a remote?
Not to program it, but the Learn button color tells you which remotes are compatible. Newer LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman openers use a yellow, purple, orange, red, or green Learn button and all run on Security+ 2.0 rolling-code technology, so a current LiftMaster or Chamberlain remote will pair right up. Very old units with a green or red learn button may need a specific compatible remote — when in doubt, match the color or ask a pro.
Will programming a new remote erase my other remotes?
No. Pressing and releasing the Learn button just adds the new remote to the opener's memory while keeping the existing ones. Your other remotes and keypads keep working. The only thing that erases everything is pressing and HOLDING the Learn button for about 6 seconds — so only do that on purpose when you want a clean slate.
